Jekyll and Hyde

Javad Tahmasebi/ Editor-in -chief

The relation between Iran and China has come to perplexing nature. It dates back to decades ago when Iran and the United States used to be allies and the sleeping dragon sought intimate bonds to take advantage of the opportunities ahead. The first relations were mainly political; however, the war between Iran and Iraq paved the grounds for China to supply the weapon and arsenals demanded by Iranian armed forces. With the absence of the US, the Eastern new power tried to consolidate its presence in Iranian markets. These attempts accompanied by Iran's isolation due to international sanctions brought the two countries closer than ever. Yet, the second round of relations included mostly economic and trade transaction. Iran was ambushed by Chinese products most of which were believed by the recipients to be of lowest quality. Iranians heard stories of high quality Jekyll Chinese goods exported to European markets while witnessing a Hyde character and failure of the same country's exports to Iran. The situation worsened when Chinese companies refused to undertake their commitments in some major projects and a number of business partners used international sanctions against Iran as an alibi to make higher profits. Now that new lights shine in Iranian horizon and China feels the threat from other global rivals, it is highly crucial for both countries to reconsider their old relations. Iranians still suspect Chinese intentions and demand further assurance. They do not want to see "the hound, Equivocal, Either to rend, Or to befriend" and have to "stand And wait the event."
